To one another, however, they said: "Alas, we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we paid no heed; that is why this anguish has now come upon us." (Genesis 42,21)

"My money has been returned!" he cried out to his brothers. "Here it is in my bag!" At that their hearts sank. Trembling, they asked one another, "What is this that God has done to us?" (Genesis 42,28)

Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there. (Genesis 43,25)

But his sobs were so loud that the Egyptians heard him, and so the news reached Pharaoh's palace. (Genesis 45,2)

But the LORD said, "I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, so I know well what they are suffering. (Exodus 3,7)

The people believed, and when they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their affliction, they bowed down in worship. (Exodus 4,31)

And now that I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are treating as slaves, I am mindful of my covenant. (Exodus 6,5)

Others, however, did not take the warning of the LORD to heart and left their servants and livestock in the fields. (Exodus 9,21)
